Dom Bailey, Construction Trainee

“I wanted a job that is different every day – and that is exactly what the construction industry is”

Dom Bailey, Construction Trainee

Dom started his Construction degree apprenticeship with Kier in December 2020, working in a site management rotational role, as an assistant to the site managers and senior management team.

Based in the site office, his job includes maintaining health and safety and liaising with supervisors and clients. He also attends university four times a year for one week blocks to study for his degree – giving him the chance to experience university life and meet people from across the UK.

I actually started a legal assistant apprenticeship but within 6 months I realised that the job really wasn’t for me. Then I was going to go to university to study business management but before I was due to start I noticed the advert for a Kier apprenticeship and decided to apply. I wanted a job that is different every day – and that is exactly what the construction industry is. There is a real sense of reward when things go well and there are lots of amazing project to be involved in.

Dom has his sights set on one day becoming a senior site manager but has learnt that the construction industry offers many different pathways and opportunities. “I’m also really interested in project management, looking at the entire project including costs and quality and leading a team. There are so many varied roles in construction and plenty of career progression opportunities. You might start as an apprentice but there are lots of ways to move into different areas.

I have been supported by my line manager to get experience in different departments. I would say to anyone considering a career in construction that there are probably more jobs than you ever realised. If you like people and problem solving then site management is a good route, if you like numbers then perhaps go for Quantity Surveying and there are creative opportunities as well through design management.
